If you can't get rid of it via your friends, you should check out Freecyle. It's kind of a complicated Yahoo group kind of thing but you basically get on an email list for your city (Sacramento, in this case) and you can offer or ask for free items. It's a non bartering, non paying, completely free with no strings attached community. I've given away and found stuff on it. Beats throwing stuff away or buying, for that matter. You can just do a google search for Freecycle and you'll find it.
